Question & things to think about from chapter 15

1)  While Paul and Barnabas are at Syrian Antioch some men come who try to persuade the Gentile believers that they must, in effect, become proselytes in order to be saved. This idea is opposed by Paul and Barnabas and a major disagreement ensues.

What do you think were the main arguments on both sides?

2)   A deputation, including Paul and Barnabas, is sent to Jerusalem to find out what the Apostles and elders there thought of this issue. It caused “much debate” there. Finally, Peter stands up and addresses them. What is his argument?

3)   After Peter finishes and they listen to Paul and Barnabas describe what God had done through them, James sums up what he thinks God is saying. Who is this James and why does he get to end the discussion?

4)   The church in Jerusalem write their decision in a letter and send it with two of their number as well who will tell it in their own words. Why do you think they did both? What was the final outcome that they were to deliver?

5)   A little later Paul wants to go visit the churches they had founded again, but he and Barnabas disagree over whether John Mark should go with them. As a result, they split up and Barnabas and Mark go to Cyprus while Paul takes Silas and goes back to the other churches.

Verse 33 says that Judas and Silas had been sent back to Jerusalem whereas here it seems Silas is still in Antioch (which is why some later manuscripts add an extra verse 34). Is this a problem? Also, what do you think about the disagreement between Paul and Barnabas?
