Question & things to think about from chapter 2

1)   Look at verses 1-4. Where were the disciples and what were they doing? The Spirit “filled the whole house”, does this mean that they were spread out in different rooms and it occurred all over, not just in one room? How does this affect your understanding of the passage?

2)   When the Spirit came on Jesus, He appeared as a dove. Now he comes as fire. What is the significance of this (hint: Think of what John the Baptiser said about Jesus)?

3)   In verses 5-13 we find people from a great number of nations hearing the works of God in their own languages. Are there that many disciples, each speaking in a specific language (and, if so, how did the mixed crowd separate out the particular voice?) or is this a second miracle where each person had the “tongues” interpreted by the Spirit for them?

4)   In Peter’s “sermon” in response to the charge that they are drunk, he starts by quoting Joel (verses 17-21, from Joel 2:28-32). Notice that this says nothing at all about tongues, so how does it “explain” what is happening?

5)   What is the flow of Peter’s argument in verses 22-36? What are the key points and what is his conclusion? How is this different from what we might have expected (what is “missing” form this evangelistic message)?

6)   In 42-47 we see the early church starting to live out the new kingdom. What were they doing? Given our current situation, think about what we can do to achieve the same sort of outcomes as they did.
